LDW Highlights
For this edition, ME Lisbon by Meliá will host an exhibition by designer Diogo Amaro.
Diogo Amaro is an architect and cabinetmaker based in Porto, Portugal. After several years working in architecture, he spent two years learning from the master cabinetmakers at FRESS, absorbing the knowledge they had to share. This period was deeply enriching, providing an opportunity to experiment and explore the relationship between design and craftsmanship. Today, Diogo designs and creates bespoke pieces of furniture and accepts personalised orders. This year he’ll be presenting a curated selection of his collections, including upcoming new work, showcasing an experimental approach to design and making, developed through his practice.
This piece is part of the "Spotlight" section of LDW26
Present in some of the world's main cultural centres, ME by Meliá is a collection of design hotels that invites you to discover contemporary culture, with a bold and charismatic identity. ME by Meliá brings together destination, design and service to provide personal and enriching experiences for the modern, stylish traveller.
Art is part of ME Lisbon's identity and helps define the irreverent character of this new hotel in Lisbon. To create a diverse and high-quality selection with a contemporary twist, the hotel turned to Guta Moura Guedes - a key figure on the Portuguese creative scene - as ME Lisbon's strategic design consultant and curator. In various spaces, there are pieces signed by well-known names from the Portuguese art scene and beyond, such as a sculpture by Fernanda Fragateiro or a tile panel by Maria Ana Vasco Costa. Ceramics are present throughout the hotel, with sculptures by Elsa Rebelo and pieces by Oficina Marques and Anna Westerlund. Photography also plays a prominent role, both in the public areas and in the corridors and rooms, with striking images by Alberto van Stokkum, among other names.
In addition to their artistic value, the pieces complement the interior design by Broadway Malyan, an international architecture, urban planning and design firm with extensive experience in the hotel industry. The project created for ME Lisbon combines sophistication and creativity, revealing a charismatic personality where a sense of place is a given, with elements inspired by the shapes and colours of the city, visible, for example, in the use of the colour lilac in both the rooms and the common areas, a reflection of Lisbon's typical jacaranda trees. The design of the building, built from scratch as a hotel, was carried out by the João Paciência architecture studio. More recently, the hotel received a new installation by architect, designer and artist Joana Astolfi.
