LDW Highlights

For the 4th edition of LDW26, Artlier is presenting a collective exhibition with the title: "O que cabe numa casa? / What can a home hold? "

From the objects we surround ourselves with, to the way we plan and organize our rooms, homes are an extension of one’s identity. They can hold family heirlooms, handmade pieces, or simple practical everyday objects that reflect our daily rhythms. Beyond the physical plane, home can be a feeling, or even an idea.
Quoting Gaston Bachelard in his book The Poetics of Space: For our house is our corner of the world... it is our first universe, a real cosmos in every sense of the word”.

Homes can be physical and emotional shelters, they are living archives of our lives. There we process our feelings and emotions and collect memories. At Artlier, there’s a connection to home from the moment someone brings one of their objects, like a chair, to be repaired at the school. People take home not only the creations that result from attending a workshop, but also the knowledge to continue their practice at home.

On the lead up to LDW26 we will bring together Artlier’s team of creators and challenge them to reflect on what home means to them and interpret it, creating an artwork to be presented in a multidisciplinary exhibition that will open the doors to the school.

What is home, where is home, what does it mean? What can a home hold? This is the starting point to discover the many stories that will be displayed. Visitors will most likely see artworks in different mediums like ceramics, wood, textiles, painting, drawing, or even brass. The event is not only an invitation to reflect on this theme, on a personal level, but to share a multitude of visions as a community.

Artlier is a school of arts and crafts.
It's a collective of talents - artisans, makers, artists, small brands, entrepreneurs – who bring together knowledge and leisure. It's a place to share knowledge, learn by doing and how to do! It's a place to tell stories of people and customs, a place to rescue time and traditions, where the desire to create meaningful moments and objects comes together around the same working table, exploring techniques and materials in a variety of mediums.
They bring together those who make and teach with those who want to experiment and learn! What could be better than learning from those who create?

They share stories of time and traditions, the desire to create meaningful moments and objects comes together around the same working table. There are moments of leisure and pleasure, moments of focus and mindfulness, where we explore creativity, occupy our hands and get out of the routine! They believe collective creativity is the shortest and fastest way to create a sense of community and value.

Artlier was born around Woodwork with Furniture Restoration and Recycling. Along came Ceramics, Painting, Textiles and others. At Artlier there is a cosy, familiar atmosphere where students and teachers form close bonds and where sharing and socialising are essential elements for motivation and creativity.
Today, Artlier wouldn’t exist as it is without the 25 partner teachers and the almost 200 students every month, offering more than 45 different activities.
