LDW Highlights
This is how the studio presents their project "MINERAL":
A study from Extraction to Extraordinary.
A Studio Gameiro exploration on depth and surface for LDW26.
We tend to forget that most things in use, and most things we find useful, come from deep underground.
The men and women who extract minerals from inside the Earth are rarely seen or heard.
They work, in a sense, in the dark.
If Design is about what you can see and touch, it is also about understanding what lies beneath the surface.
What started initially with salt for our Studio will now continue with copper, mirroring the experience of translating natural layers found in each extraction process, into the "artificial" strata which are part of every cycle of production.
For this edition of Lisbon Design Week we are partnering with ST VINCENTS in Antwerp and designer Nick Valentijn, to showcase what a collaboration is: a transformative process.
As any object takes shape, it goes through many hands.
It is passed over, transported and transformed.
It travels underground and overground.
It experiences light and darkness, cold and heat.
It contracts and expands. It changes shape.
A collaboration follows the same path.
This one started somewhere and went through a metamorphosis, not always metaphorical.
In a way, it showcases how great Design is part of a particular metabolism.
As objects take shape, Designers do too.
"Ceci n'est pas une pipe", as Magritte would say.
It might just be a lamp.
Abstraction must turn into concrete, literally.
Concepts must translate into something which one can touch, go through, sit on.
Everything which forms a space, in every single shape, can have poetry.
If it is obvious, we keep it out of sight.
