LDW Highlights

"Sake Spirits" is an exhibition and pop-up Sake Bar, presenting a limited collection of unique ceramic vessels by the Lisbon based ceramic artist Carlos Manuel Gonçalves, alongside a selection of fine Japanese Sake.
Carlos’s work is inspired by his childhood in the Portuguese countryside of Alentejo – its traditions, memories and the creatures and monsters that once inhabited his vivid imagination. His distinctive work is playing with symbols and characters of the popular, mythical and religious realm, while applying a humorous and loving eye to each skilfully made object.
For Sake Spirits Carlos created a limited collection of drinking vessels - cups and carafes - that are inspired by the culture of gathering for a drink amongst kindred spirits and strangers alike. A shared drink at the end of the day allows for spontaneous camaraderie, cheerfulness and looseness of the self. The exhibition is staged as a pop-up Sake Bar, where Carlos’s pieces are allowed to be touched and drank from. In doing so, the enticing and cheeky creations encourage the drinker to relax, mingle and explore their Sake Spirits. Which one is yours?

For Lisbon Design Week the space of Ours is turned into a pop-up Sake bar, offering a selection of fine Japanese Sake to be enjoyed from Carlos Manuel Gonçalves’s pieces of art.

Ours is an evolving space right on Estrela Park, opening its doors for the second time for visitors during Lisbon Design Week. It is privately run by Laura and Richie Hawtin, the electronic musician, who originally imagined the space to become the Lisbon dependance of their Japanese Sake Store and Bar in Berlin, Our Sake Club. They envision the space to become a cultural meeting place on the intersection of Japanese and European culture, art and ideas, Japanese Sake and Tea.
