LDW Highlights

Living Layers reimagines vertical farming as living symbiotic ecosystems, combining design, computation and natural intelligence to create bioreceptive, low-tech, and locally-adapted structures nurturing food and biodiversity in cities. Treating Nature as an active agent in the design process, geometry emerges from plant needs. 3D printed in porous materials, the towers passively absorb, store, and distribute water, improving air quality and attracting new life forms with its bioreceptive surface.

BY THE END OF MAY is a research and design studio exploring the roles of manufacturing and crafts in creating a non-linear, post-consumerism and anti-alienation economy. The studio develops speculative projects at the intersection of digital fabrication, biomaterial engineering, and more-than-human design, to imagine how cities can become locally-productive, self-sufficient, and regenerative.

Located between waterside warehouses and centuries-old churches—our Lisbon hotel is the city's most sustainable building to date, with certifications and all. "This proud carbon-neutral oasis is the brainchild of our collective: a team of engineers, designers, makers, environmentalists and chefs. From foundations to doorknobs, every inch of this place is crafted with radical care for people and the planet. Also, the sunset view over the river from the rooftop might alter your brain chemistry forever. Pretty sure you've never seen anything like it."
