Sofia Albuquerque

Ceramics
Albuquerque, known artistically as SAL, has built a creative identity that reflects her essence. The name *SAL is both a contraction of her name and a representation of her pure, intuitive nature.

Rather than being confined to a single label—ceramicist, illustrator, or painter—Sofia allows their creative journey to evolve organically, even in the choice of materials she works with. However, she has dedicated herself mainly to ceramics since 2010, thus her atelier started gradually to be taken over exclusively by this discipline. _ “I come to the workshop with no ideas, and I just let the clay take me, it's a dialogue, it's a feeling.” affirms Sofia. The process is less about rigid definitions and more about embracing what life presents in each moment, fostering both joy and a deep sense of freedom.

The philosophies and way of life of ancestral people, oriental or Mexican are her inspiration for working with ceramics. A deep admiration for Japanese handcrafted pottery, plays an important role through the dedication that they put into each object and the respect for its life and function. Therefore, she considers that utilitarian objects will always be an important part of her work, as this was the original function that man gave to pottery.

*Note: Sal in Portuguese means Salt.
