Emmanuel Babled was born in France in 1967 and graduated in Industrial Design at the European Institute of Design in Milan. He started his activity as a designer in Paris and moved to Milan in 1992, the city where he founded his own studio and worked for 18 years. Before settling in Lisbon in early 2016, he lived for 5 years in Amsterdam.
Babled has been working for over 30 years in the creation of limited and exclusive series of pieces of furniture, accessories and other design objects - the Babled Editions, a result of extensive research on the traditional techniques of different countries - an activity that he keeps abreast with the creation of projects, design consulting and curating for large companies and prestigious brands.
Each series is based on the conviction that an integral project must come into being via direct contact with the the technique and terrain of its production, with the utmost respect for the cultural and social characteristics of each context. Each project both celebrates and challenges traditional master craftsmanship by combining the invaluable know-how of great master craftsmen with original designs and digital innovation, in pursuit of a mutually beneficial and reciprocal exchange.
Babled’s experience of the extraordinary world of glass making in Murano dates back to 1995. The incomparable craftsmanship, the camaraderie and capacity of the masters and the mesmerising milieu of the furnaces is a spectacle of reality, and now more than ever the preservation and prosperity of this craft depends on innovative ideas, a collaborative spirit and imagination.
Over the years Babled’s designs have unified and challenged the master craftsmen of Murano towards new levels experimentation and innovation via his innate ability to communicate nuances of creative expression, an affiliation which can only be achieved by years of experience and a well nurtured fidelity. The initiation of Murano has inspired Babled over the years to explore materials and collaborate with artisanal excellence elsewhere in Italy, from the expertise and epitome of marble in Carrara, to the raw and resilient lava stone of Mount Etna, to the renowned foundries and carpenters of Lombardy. Elsewhere in the world Babled has worked with traditional carpet and textile techniques of northern India and Nepal, with cork in Portugal and most recently with various groups of African artisans in Tanzania.
